Ricardo Viana Vargas, Ph.D.
Ricardo Vargas is a leading voice in the project management field and a pioneer in applying artificial intelligence to project management. Specializing in implementing innovative global initiatives, capital projects, and product development, Ricardo has directed dozens of projects across industries and continents, managing more than $20 billion over the past 27 years.
Former chairman of the Project Management Institute (PMI), he was responsible for the creation of the Brightline Initiative from 2016 to 2020. Ricardo was also the director of project management and infrastructure at the United Nations, leading more than 1,000 humanitarian and development projects.
He wrote 17 books in the field, has delivered 250 keynote addresses in 40 countries, and hosts the "5 Minutes Podcast," which has reached 14 million views. Ricardo is a recognized authority in AI-driven project management, being the co-author of the highly acclaimed HBR article "How AI Will Transform Project Management," which was one of the top-read articles worldwide for nine weeks. He also authored the Generative AI in Project Management course on LinkedIn, with more than 250,000 students enrolled.
His influence on the sector was affirmed when he received the highest recognition of the Project Management Institute, the PMI Fellow Award. Ricardo holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, a master's in Industrial Engineering, and an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering.
